We can do whatever we want 'cause we are rich and powerful....We are the US Congress

U.S. Congress will reconvene after the new year to consider the Protect IP Act and the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). If these bills are allowed to pass, they will wreak havoc on the internet.  They say they want to decrease the size of government but yet they are hell bent on passing bills that will undoubtedly increase government oversight and size.  These bills differ in certain respects but, “they share an underlying approach and an enforcement philosophy that pose grave constitutional problems and that could have potentially disastrous consequences for the stability and security of the Internet’s addressing system, for the principle of interconnectivity that has helped drive the Internet’s extraordinary growth, and for free expression”.

It’s fair to assume that there is a great amount of lobbying taking place in Washington funded by companies who support the above bills.  If these sweeping pieces of legislation pass, the U.S. will join the likes of China and Iran in censoring the Internet. “To begin with, the bills represent an unprecedented, legally sanctioned assault on the Internet’s critical technical infrastructure. Based upon nothing more than an application by a federal prosecutor alleging that a foreign website is “dedicated to infringing activities,” Protect IP authorizes courts to order all U.S. Internet service providers, domain name registries, domain name registrars, and operators of domain name servers — a category that includes hundreds of thousands of small and medium-sized businesses, colleges, universities, nonprofit organizations, and the like — to take steps to prevent the offending site’s domain name from translating to the correct Internet protocol address. These orders can be issued even when the domains in question are located outside of the United States and registered in top-level domains (e.g., .fr, .de, or .jp) whose operators are themselves located outside the United States”.  By the way,   the bill’s sponsor is none other than Rep. Lamar Smith, the GOP chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.

Website Blocking

With this bill, government can order Internet service providers to block websites for infringing links posted by any users.  Websites like Reddit, Tumblr, and even Youtube, are fair targets to be shutdown.

Risk of Jail for Ordinary Users

It becomes a felony with a potential 5 year sentence to stream a copyrighted work that would cost more than $2,500 to license, even if you are a totally noncommercial user, e.g. singing a pop song on Facebook.

Chaos for the Internet

Thousands of sites that are legal under the DMCA would face new legal threats. People trying to keep the internet more secure wouldn’t be able to rely on the integrity of the DNS system.

How to Fight Back

If this law passes, you’ll wake up to find sites you love blocked by the US government. Tell Congress to vote “no” on SOPA.  Contact your congressman to tell them your against the bill, either by calling their office, writing a letter, or sending a prepared message though

It is also useful to know who the enemy is.  The following major companies support SOPA.  You can write or call the companies to let them know you are boycotting their services and products unless they end their support for the dangerous bill.

Click on the following link below to see what companies are backing these bills and how much money they’ve given to the various members of congress to insure its passing.
